Research Log Entry 1.
In your research log entry:
1. Discuss how the author, the publisher, the faculty member, the library, and the students can be accommodated.
The publisher makes the book, the library buys several copies, the students check it out from the library which increases circulation, the student is able to do their assignment, the publisher receives money from the library and the author makes profit.
2. How can a fair arrangement be achieved?
I believe that as long as the library buys several copies from the publisher and maybe rents it to students fairly cheap, everyone will get arranged ho they wanted to.
3. What are the challenges in creating a fair arrangement for everyone?
Some challenges are prices. For example how much to charge students for renting a book and how much the publisher wants of profit.
Research Log Entry 2 (3 points)
Create a research entry on your blog that discusses the following:
1. How can a balance be achieved between protecting privacy and meeting the needs of national security? (1 point)
Balance may be achieved by enforcing the privacy laws. Also, we can meet the needs of national security by still being aware to threats such as terrorism.
2. How did you react to the list of challenged books (were you surprised, for example)? Do you think some books should be banned or should all books be freely available? Why?
No i was surprised because because it was nothing i havent heard before. I think all books should be freely available because every individual has the right to have knowledge about whatever they wish. For example, if a 10 year old is checking out adult books then it is not the libraries responsibility to be chasing after that child, its their parents responsibility, after all the library has no right to deny anyone from checking out any form of books.
3. How have your overall ideas about information ethics changed or not changed after completing this unit?
It has made me realize how controversial publishing challeged books may be and how publishing books is really about. This unit really emphasizes on the importance of the copyright law and how is should be used.

Copyright: Unfortunately, libraries can only afford to buy one copy of any book they decide to buy. In fact, there are many books that they can't afford at all. This makes it very difficult for a publisher to make money and the author, who only gets a small portion of that, generally makes little or no money for textbooks and those types of materials. Setting a price for a book is a challenge, as you note, but it's also a challenge to figure out how many books you "think" will sell so that you don't produce too many.
ReplyDeleteThe trouble with privacy laws is that they are changing all the time. During the Bush administration, many of them were weakened and police officials gained rights regarding wiretapping and checking on citizens at will. It's difficult to know if we can recoup these rights.
With the banned books and censorship, I agree with you. Books should be freely available and parents should make decisions about their children's reading.
